Editorial Policy & Calculator Methodology

How we explain pet insurance concepts, document assumptions, and correct errors.

Last reviewed: 2026-10-05

Purpose and scope

Our content is written to explain common pet insurance mechanics in plain English. It is educational information, not individualized insurance, legal, financial, or veterinary advice. We do not tell visitors which policy to buy.

Calculator methodology

The claim model follows a consistent waterfall: remove non-covered amounts, apply any remaining annual deductible, multiply the eligible remainder by the reimbursement rate, then cap the result at the remaining annual limit. The owner pays the original bill minus the modeled reimbursement.

The worth-it model adds 12 monthly premiums to the owner's modeled share of eligible bills and compares that total with paying those eligible bills without insurance. Every result depends on the values entered by the visitor.

Content standards

Guides use concrete examples and identify important simplifications. We distinguish modeled outputs from guarantees and remind readers that exclusions, waiting periods, pre-existing conditions, and policy wording can change an actual claim outcome.

Corrections and updates

If a calculation, explanation, or link is inaccurate, we review the issue and correct material errors. Pages show a last-reviewed date when their substance changes. To report a problem, use the contact page.

Independence and disclosure

The site does not currently sell insurance or receive compensation for ranking a specific insurer. If advertising, affiliate relationships, or sponsored content are introduced, they will be identified separately and will not determine calculator results.
